Pinner → Portugal
Pinner to Portugal
The furthest destination we serve by road, and the one where the whole plan follows from a single fact: once the vehicle leaves, nobody is driving back for the rest of it.
One loading, planned as such
- The inventory is complete before the vehicle arrives, not during
- The loft, the garage and the garden room are decided beforehand
- Anything undecided goes into store rather than onto the lorry "just in case"
- The certificate and the load agree, because one is built from the other
The route
Out of HA5 to the M25 and through Kent. The whole western length of France — Rouen, Le Mans, Tours, Poitiers — to Bordeaux. South to the Spanish border at Irún, then Burgos, Valladolid and Salamanca to Vilar Formoso, and from there the A25 west for Porto or the A23 and A1 south for Lisbon, the Alentejo and the Algarve.
It is a serious piece of driving with mandatory rest inside it, planned and priced accordingly rather than pretended away.
NIF first, certificate second
The número de identificação fiscal is the bottleneck on this route and it is entirely independent of the removal, so there is no reason to wait. With it in hand: address proof, residency evidence, and then the certificado de bagagem from the consulate covering your UK address.
Because that certificate is built from the inventory, the inventory on a Portuguese job is written with more care than on any other route — itemised, valued in Portuguese, checked by you, and matching exactly what will be on the vehicle.
At the far end
The Algarve is mostly workable; the cities are not. Lisbon and Porto are steep, cobbled and narrow, and a window hoist is a normal method there rather than an exotic one.
Spain shares most of this drive if you are weighing the two destinations.
Worth knowing
Pinner to Portugal, the long route explained
Why does loading once matter so much?
Because the drive crosses France and almost all of Spain with statutory driver rest inside it. A second trip is effectively a second move, so the inventory must be complete and the household genuinely ready before the vehicle loads.
What is the NIF and how early?
The Portuguese tax number, obtained through a fiscal representative or a consulate. First, before the property and before the move — it underpins renting, buying, residency and customs.
What is the certificado de bagagem?
The baggage certificate, issued by the Portuguese consulate covering your UK address before the goods travel. It records your household goods as used personal effects and is built directly from the inventory.
What if the two do not match?
Clearance stops while somebody reconciles them. It is the commonest Portuguese delay, it is a paperwork failure rather than a transport one, and it is preventable at this end.
How is the drive planned?
Around statutory driver rest as fixed points, with the route stated on the quote: the western length of France to Bordeaux, into Spain at Irún, across through Burgos, Valladolid and Salamanca to Vilar Formoso, then west or south.
Algarve access?
Coastal villas and apartments are generally fine. Hillside properties above the older towns are the exception — steep, narrow and sometimes unmade drives, finished by a smaller vehicle.
Lisbon and Porto?
Steep, cobbled and tight, with staircases narrower than anything in HA5. A hoist through a window is routine and must be established before the load leaves.

The Portuguese file cannot begin without it, and the file — not the drive — is what sets the date.
